Red Book of the Russian Federation is reissued

"There was an historical event for the whole nature conservation community. The Red Book was reissued in Russia for the first time since 1997. And this is not just a list of species, but an animal protection tool that provides an opportunity to fight poachers and anyone who trades in the illegal market of wild animals and their derivatives,” Sergei Donskoi emphasized.

In order to develop proposals and recommendations facilitating making decisions related to the maintenance of the Red Book of the Russian Federation, the Commission has been established under the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia, the Regulation on which has been approved by the order of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia on 07/09/2015.

During the period 2015-2017, the Commission carried out work on the preparation of the draft List of Wildlife Objects listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation and those excluded from it. The draft order was sent for coordination to the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia and for the preparation of an expert opinion in the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The corresponding order, which contains lists of rare and endangered wildlife objects listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation and those excluded from it, was signed by the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia Sergey Donskoy.

It included species (subspecies, populations) of the animal world, which, when discussed by experts at meetings of the relevant commission on rare species, obtained the almost unanimous assessment.

In particular, in addition to the striped hyena, seal-monk and saiga, the species of fauna such as the Hanqai plague, speckled ground squirrel, Indian porcupine, European broadsheet, and others have been introduced in the new edition of the Red Book. The species excluded from the Red Book of the Russian Federation: butterfly Mnemosin, aukha (Chinese perch), Elopichthys bambusa, Sodatov som and common gray shrike.

The decision on the disputed species (Himalayan bear, subspecies of reindeer, gray goose, several species of bean, gray duck, Caucasian chamois, Caucasian noble deer, Siberian mountain goat and common turtledove) will be made after additional research following discussions at the Commission on rare species and species being under the threat of extinction including animals, plants and fungi, taking into account the completeness and validity of information.
