Exclusion of inhabited localities from the Baikal lake water protection zone does not reduce the lake protection regime

Today the presence of inhabited localities, of social and engineering infrastructure facilities, domestic solid waste storage locations, cemeteries, filling stations within the boundaries of the Water protection zone at the Baikal contravenes the requirements of the water legislation.

The decision by the Government of the Russian Federation adopted in March 2018 on exclusion of these facilities from the Water protection zone is an indispensable solution for ensuring the constitutional rights of citizens living over the Baikal lake. It simultaneously ensures the preservation of maximum environmental restrictions in order to protect the unique natural site.
