Tourist camps are violating environmental legislation on Lake Baikal

Inspections revealed infringements in the central ecological zone of the Baikal Natural Territory of the Republic of Buryatia.

"More than 90% of tourist accommodation sites operate with infringements and have a negative impact on the environment," the press service of the Baikal interregional environmental prosecutor's office said. Only the Kabansky, Pribaikalsky and Barguzinsky districts of the republic have registered 179 operating subjects of recreational activity. The central ecological zone in the North Baikal region and the city of Severobaikalsk has 16 tourist camps.

There have been established cases of unauthorized occupation of land plots, violations of the rules for their use, construction, reconstruction of sites without a positive conclusion of the state ecological expertise, use of drinking wells without licenses for the subsoil operation and sanitary and epidemiological conclusions, as well as cluttering of land and other violations.

Tourist facilities were required in court to prohibit certain types of activities before the elimination of law infringements, as well as demolish camps built on illegally occupied land plots. The submissions considered, economic entities took measures to eliminate infringements of environmental legislation.
