Water from the Depths of Baikal is Still Clean

The Baikal water from the depths of the lake is still clean, Viktor Danilov-Danilyan, research supervisor of the Institute of Water Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told RIA Novosti.

In his presentation at the All-Russian Water Congress, Director of the Limnological Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Andrei Fedotov said that the concentration of the toxin-producing bacteria in Baikal had grown to extreme values, and therefore soon the water from the lake would not be suitable for drinking.

“In Baikal, the pollution spreads to shallow water. Baikal drinking water is taken from the main volume, from a depth of at least 20 meters. Baikal water is not intended for constant drinking, because it does not contain the mineral salts necessary for humans. This water can be used for drinking only for dessert purposes, and for constant drinking it is too pure, like distilled. Naturally, distilled water can only be produced under laboratory conditions, but Baikal water is closest to that in composition. If you drink only Baikal water, sooner or later, you will feel poorly. So far, deep-water Baikal is coping with pollution, as it has been doing for millions of years,” Danilov-Danilyan claimed.
