Volunteers will clean 10 kilometers of Lake Baikal coastline from garbage as part of the environmental campaign "Water of Russia" and the Horizon eco-festival. The joint event of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia and Moskvarium will be held on September 16, 2023 in the village of Turka.

Baikal is the largest freshwater lake in Eurasia. Its depth is 1187 meters below the level of the world ocean, and the shores are located at an altitude of 456-457 meters above sea level. Baikal contains almost a fifth of all fresh water reserves in the world. The All-Russian volunteer action "Water of Russia" and the Center for Oceanography and Marine Biology "Moskvarium" invite everyone to join the action to clean up the coast. Participation is free, and all inventory will be given out on the spot.

Together with the volunteers, Pavel Baryshev, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of Russia, Ivan Alheev, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Republic of Buryatia, Natalia Tumureeva, Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Republic of Buryatia, ambassadors of the action will come out for cleaning - actress and TV presenter Yulia Mikhalkova, Olympic medalist, choreographer, producer of ice shows and sports events Ilya Averbukh, theater and film actress Elizaveta Arzamasova, Director of the Center for the Development of the Water Management Complex of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia Ilya Razbash, head of the scientific department of the Center for Oceanography and Marine Biology "Moskvarium", chief veterinarian, volunteer of the ecofestival "Horizon"Irina Suvorova" and ecological communities of the region.

Thanks to the Moskvarium, the action was supported by more than a thousand people who took part in a charity run as part of the Horizon ecological festival, which is held for the third year in a row. This is one of the landmark projects dedicated to the principles of ecology, awareness and self-development. The mission of the festival is to inspire everyone to open new horizons and change themselves, and through this to change the world around for the better.

The mission of the campaign is to collect garbage from 10 kilometers of the lake shore and show the scale and composition of the human garbage trail in the unique ecosystem of Lake Baikal, as well as to draw attention to the problem of overconsumption. At the event, the Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Republic of Buryatia Natalia Tumureeva will hold an ecological lecture on the flora and fauna of Lake Baikal, its problems and importance in the water balance of fresh water around the world. Moskvarium experts will tell about the problem of biological and anthropogenic pollution of Lake Baikal: the head of the scientific department of the Center for Oceanography and Marine Biology Moskvarium, chief veterinarian, volunteer of the Horizon eco-festival Irina Suvorova and leading ichthyologist Sergey Sinelnikov.
